The Heart of England is at the very centre of the nation’s network of canals and rivers. Connecting the cathedral cities of Worcester, Gloucester and Coventry with historic Stratford-upon-Avon and bustling Birmingham, the Midlands’ canals and rivers take you deep into the heart of the picturesque English shires as well as the Potteries and the Black Country, cradle of the Industrial Revolution.

Britain’s longest river, the Severn, and Shakespeare’s Avon are the starting points for a network of narrow canals that years ago brought trade and prosperity to market towns and country villages. Their towpath hedges now teem with wildlife, while their hump-back bridges and locks have become part of the rural landscape.

Birmingham alone has 100 miles of waterways at the centre of England’s inland waterways network - more than Venice. So there’s always something new to discover.

See for yourself: discover the canals and rivers at the Heart of England!
