No visit to Atlanta is complete without a visit to the Fernbank museum of natural history. This museum has one of the largest collections of artifacts, dinosaurs, interactive science exhibits, wildlife, shells, and more. It also has its own Imax cinema.

An Overview of the Atlanta Fernbank Museum of Natural History

The Fernbank Museum of Natural History opened its doors on October 5, 1992.  The museum’s mission is to encourage visitors to get a greater appreciation of the planet earth and its inhabitants. Visitors can enjoy the science interactive, have a peek at ancient fossils and cultural treasures, watch a thrilling IMAX Theatre film, and get a closer look at some of the largest dinosaur skeletons ever discovered. The Fernbank Museum takes you on a journey to the past with and its exclusive exhibitions always offers something new to discover. Their staff members are always working behind-the-scenes to do further research and build upon their current collections.

The Fernbank museum really goes out of its way to engage the community with their selection of special activities.  They cater for children as well as adults and some of the most popular activities include interactive conversations, summer camps, workshops, lectures, storytelling, and family activity days.

Adults can also enjoy one of the exciting Fernbank Martinis & IMAX events that run every Friday night from January to November.  The show is presented by Turner Broadcasting System and features IMAX films, food, drinks, and live music.

Exhibitions at the Atlanta Fernbank Museum of Natural History

The museum has some exclusive permanent exhibitions like the A Walk through Time in Georgia, Giants of the Mesozoic, and Sensing Nature. 

The ‘A Walk through Time in Georgia’ exhibition tells the story of Georgia's natural history as well as looking at the development of the planet. The Giants of the Mesozoic features a Giganotosaurus and a 37-meter long Argentinosaurus.
These exhibitions are combined with other special exhibitions, unique educational programming, and travel opportunities to teach their visitors about the physical universe, earth's history, human culture, and the environment.

The Atlanta Fernbank Museum of Natural History Particulars

The museums hours are Monday to Saturday 10 AM to 5 PM, and Sunday from noon to 5 PM.  The museum also stays open later for the Martinis & Imax events, which happens from 5:30 to 10 PM every Friday night. If you need a hotel room near the museum, visit AtlantaHotels.org.

Museum admission is $15 for adults, $14 for students and seniors, and $13 for Children under 12.
